Microsoft engineering levels: 59 to 67 explained

Microsoft uses numeric levels rather than named rungs: SDE around 59 to 60, SDE II around 61 to 62, Senior SDE around 63 to 64, and Principal around 65 to 67, with Partner and Distinguished bands above. Most titles span two numbers, so a promotion within one title is still a real step.

The numbers confuse people arriving from a named ladder, and the useful model is that each title covers two levels. Moving from 61 to 62 is a genuine promotion that does not change what your CV says, which is a structural difference from companies where the title and the rung are the same thing.

Level 63 is the one to understand. Senior SDE is the recognised terminal band, an engineer can remain there for a career, and it holds the largest share of the ladder. The step that changes how the outside world reads you is Senior to Principal, not the increments inside either.

As everywhere on this page, these bands are convention rather than published policy. They circulate through levels.fyi, Blind and recruiters, and different sources put the boundaries in slightly different places.

Common questions

What is a Microsoft level 63?
Level 63 is the lower of the two Senior SDE bands. It is widely treated as Microsoft's terminal level, meaning an engineer can stay there indefinitely without promotion pressure, and it is roughly comparable in scope to Google L5.
How do Microsoft levels map to Google's?
Loosely: 59 to 60 near L3, 61 to 62 near L4, 63 to 64 near L5, and 65 upward into L6 and beyond. Two Microsoft numbers usually sit inside one named rung elsewhere, so the mapping is a range rather than a conversion.
What comes after Principal at Microsoft?
Partner, and above that Distinguished Engineer and Technical Fellow. Those upper bands are a very small population and function closer to appointments than to promotions.

No course promotes anyone. Levels are awarded by employers against their own ladder, on evidence collected over months. What material like this can do is close a specific knowledge gap that is currently in the way.
