Decay, Refresh and Consolidation

Identify pages that are losing ground, decide between updating, merging and removing each one, and explain why freshness is weighted the way it is in AI citations.

Content decay is a diagnosis and prioritisation problem: find pages whose search performance is slipping, identify whether the cause is stale facts, shifted intent, overlap, thin coverage or weak trust, then choose refresh, consolidation, redirect, noindex or deletion based on demand, authority and strategic value.

Content decay means a page that once answered a query well is no longer as competitive, useful, or trusted as alternatives. The signal is usually not one metric by itself, but a pattern: impressions holding while clicks fall, rankings slipping for important queries, conversions weakening, backlinks pointing to stale material, or newer competitors answering the same intent more completely.

Content decay is when a page that used to satisfy a search intent becomes less useful or less competitive. It often shows up as falling clicks, weaker rankings, poorer conversions, or loss of visibility against newer pages. The cause may be outdated information, changed intent, internal overlap, thin coverage, technical faults or weaker authority.
How do I decide whether to refresh or consolidate a page?
Refresh a page when it still targets a distinct intent and has demand or authority worth preserving, but the content is incomplete or out of date. Consolidate when multiple URLs answer the same intent and split relevance. Keep the strongest URL, move the best material there, and redirect weaker duplicates.
Does changing the publish date improve rankings?
Changing a date alone is not a meaningful refresh. Freshness matters when the answer can go stale, such as tools, APIs, security advice, prices, legal guidance or current recommendations. Search and AI citation systems favour recent sources only when recency reduces user risk and makes the answer more reliable.
