AI answer products are usually grounded in existing search indexes, not a fresh crawl of the live web. Google AI experiences depend on Google’s index, Copilot depends on Bing, while ChatGPT Search and Perplexity combine their own systems with outside retrieval sources. If an upstream index cannot see you, multiple answer products may miss you.

Notes
An AI answer engine is usually not searching the whole internet live from scratch. It starts from one or more web indexes: large databases built by crawlers that have already discovered pages, fetched them, parsed them, and decided whether they are worth keeping. The language model then uses retrieved documents or snippets from those indexes to produce a fluent answer with citations or links.
The important map is product to backing index. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are backed by Google’s search systems and index. Microsoft Copilot is backed by Bing.

- Do AI answer engines crawl the whole web for every answer?
- No. They typically retrieve from indexes and search systems that already crawled, parsed and filtered pages. The model then turns retrieved material into an answer, often with links or citations. If your page is not available in the relevant retrieval layer, the answer can still be produced, but it will be based on other sources.
- Which search index matters for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
- Google’s AI search experiences are backed by Google’s own search systems and index. That means ordinary Google crawl access, index eligibility and search visibility are directly relevant. If a page is blocked, excluded or not considered index-worthy by Google, it should not be expected to appear as a cited source in those Google AI surfaces.
- Why can absence from Bing affect more than Bing results?
- Bing is not only a search engine front end. Its retrieval systems feed products such as Copilot, and have also been important to other AI search integrations. If your site is unavailable to Bing’s crawler or absent from its index, that can remove it from several downstream answer experiences that depend on Bing-backed retrieval.
