The written notes below cover this idea in full - you lose nothing by reading instead of watching.

AI-visibility scores are sampling outputs, not universal truth. Their value depends on the prompts, engines, markets, accounts, dates, entity matching, and measurement rules behind them. Two credible 2026 reports can disagree sharply on Reddit because one is counting citations in a narrow answer set while another is measuring a different population.

What this lesson answers

  • what does an AI visibility score actually measure
  • why do AI citation studies disagree so much
  • how should I compare AI visibility tools

Notes

An AI-visibility score is not a universal measurement of “how often AI recommends us.” It is a number produced by a specific sampling design: a chosen set of prompts, locations, languages, devices, engines, dates, accounts, and competitors, followed by rules for detecting mentions, links, citations, sentiment, and rank. The score is useful only after you know what population it claims to represent and what it ignores.

Think of these tools like synthetic mystery shoppers. They ask a panel of prepared questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, or another system, then record what…

Common questions

Why can credible AI visibility reports show very different Reddit numbers?
They can be measuring different things under the same label. One report may sample consumer prompts in a citation-heavy answer engine, while another may examine business queries, AI Overviews, referral traffic, or logged behaviour. The denominator, prompt set, engine, date, geography, and citation definition can all change Reddit’s apparent share.
Is an AI visibility score the same as how often AI recommends my brand?
No. It is the result of a tool’s test design. The score reflects selected prompts, locations, languages, engines, accounts, competitors, and matching rules. It may capture mentions, links, citations, sentiment, rank, or a proxy for impressions. Without the sampling method, the number is not interpretable.
How should I evaluate an AI visibility platform before trusting it?
Treat it like an observability metric. Check what population it claims to represent, which engines it queries, how prompts are chosen, how often tests run, how entities are matched, and what counts as a mention or citation. Then decide whether that slice supports your actual marketing or product decision.
