Search Console generative-AI reports measure visibility and traffic from covered Google search surfaces, within a fixed reporting schema. They can show impressions, clicks, trends, and supported breakdowns such as page, query, country, device, or search type. They do not reveal generated answer text, citation context, selection reasons, or unavailable history.

Notes

Search Console generative-AI reporting is measurement for search visibility, not a full observability system for Google’s generated answers. Treat it like the Performance report applied to generative-AI search surfaces: it can help answer whether your site is receiving impressions and clicks from the covered experience, how those metrics trend over time, and how they break down across the dimensions Google exposes in the interface and API.

The mental model is a sampled dashboard with a fixed schema. You can use it to compare trends, spot pages or queries that changed, and separate supported…

Common questions

Can Search Console show every AI answer that mentioned my site?
No. Search Console does not act as a complete log of generated answers. It reports the metrics and search surfaces Google has chosen to expose. If your brand or content appeared somewhere that is not part of the report, or in a form Google does not count, it will not appear there.
Can I use these reports to see why Google selected a page?
No. The reports are measurement data, not an explanation system. They can show whether a page received impressions or clicks and how those metrics changed. They do not show the generated wording, the model’s reasoning, the full user prompt, or why one source was preferred over another.
Can missing AI search dimensions be recovered with filters?
No. Filters can only slice dimensions that exist in the schema. If a dimension is not exposed, filtering more aggressively will not recreate it. The same applies to earlier periods: data begins from the documented start point for the report or dimension and is not rebuilt backwards.
